Braun, Neiva; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Lima, Ronaldo Lima de; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Baldisserotto, Bernardo; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria; Dafre, Alcir Luiz; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Nuñer, Alex Pires de Oliveira; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
This study evaluated the biochemical changes associated to successive captures of Salminus brasiliensis reared at different stocking densities. The experiment was conducted in tanks with a capacity of 1,000 L, connected to a recirculating system with temperature control and continuous aeration. Fish were stocked at densities of 30, 150 and 300 fish m-3 and the successive catches were applied at the end of the experimental period of 80 days. The biochemical changes were evaluated at the end of the trial through the parameters: hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose and lactate in plasma and Na+, K+ and Cl- and Ca2+ in the gills. The concentration of glucose increased with the increase of stocking density as also registered for lactate concentration, except for...

Blood lactate threshold reflects glucose responses in horses submitted to incremental exercise test Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ferraz,G.C.; D’Angelis,F.H.F.; Teixeira-Neto,A.R.; Freitas,E.V.V.; Lacerda-Neto,J.C.; Queiroz-Neto,A..

A simple and clear means to identify the physiological status of follicles is essential for study of follicular biology. In the present study, we verified a novel classification procedure based on analysis of the follicular population and glucose concentration in follicular fluid (FF) as an alternative method to classify bovine follicles. Paired ovaries were collected from heifers, and the number of follicles and stage of the CL were recorded. Follicles were initially divided into the following 3 groups according to diameter and the ratio of E2 and P4 (E/P): E2 active (E-A: E/P≥1), E2 inactive (E-I: E/P<1, ≥8.5 mm) and small follicles (E/P<1, <8.5 mm). E-A follicles were easily identified as E2-rich dominant follicles and were further classified...

Distance exercised during submaximal training on race winnings for Thoroughbred racehorses Ciência Rural
Berkman,Carolina; Teixeira,Luisa Gouvea; Pereira,Marsel Carvalho; Sampaio,Rita de Cássia de Lima; Bernardi,Nara Saraiva; Lacerda Neto,José Correia de; Queiroz Neto,Antonio de; Ferraz,Guilherme de Camargo.
Evaluations of the physical fitness of Thoroughbred racehorses have been correlated with race earnings, but few reports exist about the influence of the distance exercised during training on both physical conditioning indices and financial productivity. During one training season sixteen claiming Thoroughbred horses were subjected to submaximal training and monitored by a global positioning system (GPS) coupled to a heart rate monitor. After initial and single monitoring, the horses were distributed into two groups of eight individuals each; one group exercised short distances (SD) between 1600 and 1900m, while the other exercised long distances (LD) between 2000 and 2350m. The duration (min) and mean and maximal velocities (ms-1)attained during each...

Effect of age and gender on sweat lactate and ammonia concentrations during exercise in the heat BJMBR
Meyer,F.; Laitano,O.; Bar-Or,O.; McDougall,D.; Heigenhauser,G.J.F..
The dependence of sweat composition and acidity on sweating rate (SR) suggests that the lower SR in children compared to adults may be accompanied by a higher level of sweat lactate (Lac-) and ammonia (NH3) and a lower sweat pH. Four groups (15 girls, 18 boys, 8 women, 8 men) cycled in the heat (42ºC, 20% relative humidity) at 50% VO2max for two 20-min bouts with a 10-min rest before bout 1 and between bouts. Sweat was collected into plastic bags attached to the subject's lower back. During bout 1, sweat from girls and boys had higher Lac- concentrations (23.6 ± 1.2 and 21.2 ± 1.7 mM; P < 0.05) than sweat from women and men (18.2 ± 1.9 and 14.8 ± 1.6 mM, respectively), but Lac- was weakly associated with SR (P > 0.05; r = -0.27). Sweat Lac-...

Effects of caffeine on time to exhaustion in exercise performed below and above the anaerobic threshold BJMBR
Denadai,B.S.; Denadai,M.L.D.R..
Controversy still exists concerning the potential ergogenic benefit of caffeine (CAF) for exercise performance. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of CAF ingestion on endurance performance during exercise on a bicycle ergometer at two different intensities, i.e., approximately 10% below and 10% above the anaerobic threshold (AT). Eight untrained males, non-regular consumers of CAF, participated in this study. AT, defined as the intensity (watts) corresponding to a lactate concentration of 4 mM, was determined during an incremental exercise test from rest to exhaustion on an electrically braked cycle ergometer. On the basis of these measurements, the subjects were asked to cycle until exhaustion at two different intensities, i.e.,...

Evaluation of anaerobic threshold in non-pregnant and pregnant rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
NETTO,ALINE OLIVEIRA; MACEDO,NATHÁLIA C.D.; GALLEGO,FRANCIANE Q.; SINZATO,YURI K.; VOLPATO,GUSTAVO T.; DAMASCENO,DÉBORA C..
ABSTRACT Several studies present different methodologies and results about intensity exercise, and many of them are performed in male rats. However, the impact of different type, intensity, frequency and duration of exercise on female rats needs more investigation. From the analysis of blood lactate concentration during lactate minimum test (LacMin) in the swimming exercise, the anaerobic threshold (AT) was identified, which parameter is defined as the transition point between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. LacMin test is considered a good indicator of aerobic conditioning and has been used in prescription of training in different exercise modalities. However, there is no evidence of LacMin test in female rats. The objective was to determine AT in...

Evaluation of microorganisms with sulfidogenic metabolic potential under anaerobic conditions BABT
Sakamoto,Isabel Kimiko; Maintinguer,Sandra Imaculada; Hirasawa,Julia Sumiko; Adorno,Maria Angela Tallarico; Varesche,Maria Bernadete Amâncio.
The aim of this work was to identify groups of microorganisms that are capable of degrading organic matter utilizing sulfate as an electron acceptor. The assay applied for this purpose consisted of running batch reactors and monitoring lactate consumption, sulfate reduction and sulfide production. A portion of the lactate added to the batch reactors was consumed, and the remainder was converted into acetic, propionic and butyric acid after 111 hours of operation These results indicate the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) catalyzing both complete and incomplete oxidation of organic substrates. The sulfate removal efficiency was 49.5% after 1335 hours of operation under an initial sulfate concentration of 1123 mg/L. The SRB concentrations...

Evaluation of Physiological Parameters of Broilers with Dorsal Cranial Myopathy Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Amaral,PC; Zimermann,C; Santos,LR; Noro,M; Prá,MD; Pilotto,F; Rodrigues,LB; Dickel,EL.
ABSTRACT There are several causes of carcass condemnation in poultry processing plants, including dorsal cranial myopathy (DCM), in which the anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle is affected. DCM etiology has not been elucidated yet, but this lesion impairs the visual quality of carcasses and causes economic losses due to downgrading and condemnation. The effects of this lesion on the systemic health of broilers are still unknown. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate muscle injury and systemic health indicators in broilers presenting or not DCM. The following parameters were evaluated: complete blood count (CBC), total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, lactate, and glucose serum levels, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and...

Gomes,Cláudio Luís Nina; Alves,Andressa Mendes; Ribeiro Filho,José Dantas; Moraes Junior,Felipe de Jesus; Chaves,Ricardo de Macedo; Aranha,Rosany Maria Cunha; Fucuta,Rodrigo Santos; Ribeiro,Bruna Maria.
ABSTRACT: In horses, acid-base balance disorders are common after intense exercise, with metabolic acidosis being the most common after high intensity and short duration exercise. Understanding the processes that cause them is fundamental for procedures, which aimed to improve the physical fitness of horses for athletic purposes, with fewer changes in homeostasis. The present study assessed the effect of barrel racing on acid base balance in Quarter Horse, at the following times: T0 - immediately before training; T1 - immediately after the end of the second course; T2 - one hour after the end of the second course. In T1, there was decrease (P<0.05) in the pH, HCO3 -, pCO2, cBase, tCO2 and strong ion difference concentrations, while the plasma lactate...

Growth and stress of dourado cultivated in cages at different stocking densities PAB
Braun,Neiva; Dafre,Alcir Luiz; Lima,Ronaldo Lima de; Beux,Luis Fernando; Brol,Fernanda Franciele; Nuñer,Alex Pires de Oliveira.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and the stress levels of juvenile dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) cultivated in cages. Fish stocked at densities of 15 (D15) and 30 (D30) fish per square meter were evaluated in a completely randomized design with three replicates. Fish were fed twice a day with extruded ration (42% crude protein). Density influenced only biomass and daily food intake, and glucose and lactate concentrations increased over time. D15 and D30 did not influence the growth of dourado. However, the increase of glucose and lactate levels over time indicates that cultivation in cages is a stressful condition for this species.

Ingestion of a moderate dose of alcohol enhances physical exercise-induced changes in blood lactate concentration BJMBR
Teixeira-Coelho,F.; Santos,D.F.C.; Santos,G.A.; Sousa,T.F.; Moreira,S.R.; Souza,M.V.C.; Wanner,S.P..
The consumption of alcoholic beverages influences carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, although it is not yet clear whether metabolism during physical exercise at different intensities is also affected. This was the objective of the present study. Eight young and healthy volunteers performed a treadmill test to identify the running speed corresponding to a lactate concentration of 4 mM (S4mM). At least 48 h later, they were subjected to two experimental trials (non-alcohol or alcohol) in which they performed two 1-km running sessions at the following intensities: 1) S4mM; 2) 15% above S4mM. In both trials, blood lactate, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations were measured before and after exercise. The acute alcohol intake increased triglycerides, but...

Lactate-upregulation of lactate oxidation complex-related genes is blunted in left ventricle of myocardial infarcted rats BJMBR
Gabriel-Costa,D.; Cunha,T.F.; Paixão,N.A.; Fortunato,R.S.; Rego-Monteiro,I.C.C.; Barreto-Chaves,M.L.M.; Brum,P.C..
Lactate modulates the expression of lactate oxidation complex (LOC)-related genes and cardiac blood flow under physiological conditions, but its modulatory role remains to be elucidated regarding pathological cardiac stress. The present study evaluated the effect of lactate on LOC-related genes expression and hemodynamics of hearts submitted to myocardial infarction (MI). Four weeks after MI or sham operation, isolated hearts of male Wistar rats were perfused for 60 min with Na+-lactate (20 mM). As expected, MI reduced cardiac contractility and relaxation with no changes in perfusion. The impaired cardiac hemodynamics were associated with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels (Sham: 19.3±0.5 vs MI: 23.8±0.3 µM), NADPH oxidase (NOX) activity (Sham:...
